Is anyone interested in finding space for a community garden project?

  1. Community GardenMichael mentioned on the front page about looking for space for a neighboorhood garden.
I know Elkhart use to have one. I’m interested. Any thoughts?

  2. I love the idea of a neighborhood garden. For now there are community gardening spots at a farm on Bertrand Road and (at least there used to be) at St. Mary’s College.Comment by Judie Mengel — July 1, 2008 @ 3:27 pm | Edit This
  3. I’m aware of the one on Bertrand, but that’s quite a drive. One of the reasons my wife and I moved to this neighborhood involved wanting to be able to limit our car usage. I was not aware of any community garden at St. Mary’s but I’ll look into it and report back. There is a South Bend Community Gardens project which has a large garden plot behind the greenhouse on Mishawaka Ave. There is a substantial waiting list for participation though. The idea situation would be to have one right in our neighborhood, but at this point we would wait until next year. It’s a matter of either finding a public space and asking the city, or finding someone with space in their yard who is open to having families come by on designated days to weed, water and tend the plants.

Sadly the Saint Mary’s community gardens, which was open to members of the Saint Mary’s community, is no more–I gardened there for 10 years and really miss it. Would definitely be interested in a Triangle garden with individual plots for members.

  1. I’m sure most of you read the article in today’s paper about the community graden behind the Greenhouse.
One of the participants mentioned goes to our church/school.
Would anyone like me to contact her and see if we can get someone to come to our neighborhood meeting to help us in finding a community garden area near us?

I don’t want to crowd the meeting too much but thought the timeing was maybe more than a coincidence!

  2. I think that is a great idea Judie!

  3. think a community garden would be wonderful, if plots in or adjacent to the neighborhood can be secured. Otherwise, it seems to defeat the purpose. I grow some veggies in my backyard, and at the very least, a vegetable exchange for surplus produce might be viable.

  4. Hi Doug
I was thinking about maybe the area between St. Joe High School and the river, behind the houses on the other side of Angela. There are trees there but maybe some open spaces too.
Anyone know whom that land belongs to?

  5. I think that land behind the houses on Angela belongs to Holy Cross College. What about the sunny spots in Parkovash park along Lafayette Blvd? That belongs to the city, right?

  6. I have tried to contact someone from one of the existing community gardens without much success. I will continue to try and get someone to come to our neighborheed meeting to help lead us.

I would NOT support using some of the land in Parovash Park. We all have small enough yards (except maybe the Hobans) and I’d like to keep that park open to the kids for as much running as possible.
Nokomis Park is supposed to be a quiet park. It would be a better area in my opinion.

My suggestion is to ask the city for area in Leeper Park near the rose garden.
It is certainly close enough for us to harvest and tend easily,
the side near the river is farly free from foot traffic and
best of all, there is already a water source there.

I also had thought of a shared harvest rather than community gardening. If 10-20 people all were interested we divide up what each person grow in their own back yard and share harvest weekly.
It would cut down on paperwork/meeting getting land from the city,
Allows easy access for tending and watering gardens
    Offers protection from “visitors.

  7. I have way too many cucumbers. Will trade for zucchini, which I forgot to plant!

  8. We are excited about the possibility of a community garden in Leeper Park! We do not have any land to grow even a small garden, so please do consider the community garden option! Hopefully we can talk about this at the meeting today.

    Thanks!

  9. Well, I finally received something back from Krista Bailey about the Community Garden at Potawatomi Greenhouse. I was hoping someone from the group could help our neighborhood begin a garden.

I believe I can attend the meeting on Sept. 9. Would anyone else be interested in going too?

I don’t know if this fits under the “Green Committee”, “Communications”, or something new altogether.

Give me a call if you would like to attend, maybe we could carpool.

  10. Sorry, here is Krista’s message-

Thank you for your interest in community gardens!
I would love to talk with your neighborhood about our expereince so far with starting and sustaining community gardens. However, at this time I am not able to make a lot of visits to various groups. We have decided, instead, to hold a community garden “open house” where ideas and strategies for starting a garden will be shared, and various people, groups and local government officials plan on being in attendance. This is tentatively scheduled for September 9 at approximately 6:30pm at the Potawatomi Greenhouse.
I do hope that your neighborhood representatives can attend. I will keep you posted as details are finalized.

  12. Just a reminder about the Community Graden meeting tomorrow.
I have another meeting at 7p that night (hopefully Victor can go) and kids that need to be picked up at 7:15 (I guess he can’t do all of that) so I don’t know if I can go for the whole meeting or at all.
    Is anyone else available??

  13. HI all,

My understanding is that the meeting changed. This is the latest information I heard:
    Greetings Gardeners and wanna-be-Gardeners!

You are invited to a Community Garden Open House Tuesday, September 16 at 6:30pm at the Potawatomi Greenhouse.
The event will present information about how to start a community garden in South Bend. It will also help to connect you to the people and resources you may need to assist with the process. After the presentation and networking times have concluded, all participants are invited to tour the Greenhouse Community Garden and/or visit other area community gardens.

We hope that you will be able to join us as we learn to grow more gardens. If you know of others who may be interested in the event, feel free to pass this email along, or go to the South Bend Community Gardens website at http://www.sbcg.org and print off the event flyer available under the “events” tab.

RSVPs to sbgardens@yahoo.com received by Monday September 15 will allow us to have a seat ready for you – thanks!
    -Krista
